All known matter is composed of chemical elements or of compounds made from those elements. Humankind’s understanding of our world is grounded in our knowledge of chemistry. Indeed all living processes are controlled by chemical reactions.

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and UNESCO strongly believe that it is time to celebrate the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind. Under the unifying theme “Chemistry-our life, our future”, International Year of Chemistry 2011 will offer a range of activities for all ages through worldwide and our country.

We invite all the chemists to celebrate this year and contribute the activities organized.

We have good news for our readers; our journal, Hacettepe Journal of Biology and Chemistry is accepted by the Turkiye Citation Index as among the registered journals. In addition, we proudly announce that our editorial board member, Dr. Çağan Şekercioğlu, has been named Scientist of the Year 2011 by the National Geographic magazine for his outstanding studies on ecology, conservation biology and ornithology. We congratulate him and wish all the best for his future career.
