Abstract

In this study, selective separation and preconcentration of Th(IV) in aqueous solutions and bastnaesite ore sample in the presence various lanthanide ions such as La(III) Ce(III) and Eu(III)) by using Th(IV)-imprinted polymers (IIPs) was carried out. For this purpose, Th(IV) was complexed with N-methacryloyl antipyrine (MAAP) and the prepared MAAP-Th(IV) complex monomer was embedded into 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) cryogel to prepare pHEMA-MAAP-Th(IV) by free radical polymerization. Th(IV) was leached with 5.0 mol L-1 HNO3 and thus Th(IV) memories were created onto p-HEMA-MAAP cryogel polymer. In the process of selective binding of Th (IV) ion to Th(IV)-imprinted p-HEMA-MAAP cryogel polymer, several parameters such as pH, flow rate, initial Th(IV) concentration were investigated to determine optimum conditions. Under the optimum conditions, the maximum binding capacity of the prepared IIPs was obtained as  45.20 mgg-1. Selectivity studies were also carried out in the presence of La(III), Ce(III) and Eu(III) ions using Th(IV) imprinted p-HEMA-MAAP cryogel polymer. It was found that p-HEMA-MAAP cryogel polymer displayed high selectivity toward Th(IV) ion. Furthermore, the selective binding of Th(IV) in the bastnaesite ore containing rare earth elements was investigated and Th(IV)-imprinted  p-HEMA-MAAP cryogel polymer was found to bind Th(IV) ion with higher selectivity compared to the other components in the bastnaesite ore.
